If you want to shred and play lightspeed metal, try some Ibanez guitars. If you're into hard rock, look into trying out some Jackson guitars. Classic rock? How about a Gibson Les Paul? Try a few models of guitar and see what feels the best for you, and what best suits the style of music you most want to play.

Once you have the guitar and the basic knowledge of the instrument, you can get started with learning to play. Many players find it best to start with learning the basic chords and the basic scales.

Once you have got used to the idea and usage of the basic chords, move onto barre chords and power chords. Once you are able to confidently switch between these methods of hitting notes, you can start to piece together your own compositions.

When you start to write your own material, don’t try and be flash all at once. Start off with something simple that you know you will be able to play relatively easily. Once you are used to basic structures and chord progressions, add another layer of difficulty to your music.

Make it slightly more complicated and harder to play. You'll soon discover that your playing is improving and you are mastering these harder pieces much quicker.

The key is to push yourself a little further with each thing that you learn. Guitarists all over the world state that they're still learning all the time, even after playing for decades on end.

The guitar is such a versatile instrument that it is virtually impossible to run out of new things to try and new things to master.

Sure, get a tutor to help you with the basics of learning to play guitar, but after the basics, you should try and continue the journey yourself. That way you can build on your lessons each time, and develop a style that is all your own.
